In the old days in Sissala villages across the Upper West Region we used to step out for a night of “Jassi” dancing with our traditional drums under the moonlight.
Everyone in the community was invited, the old, the young and the children. We would form a circle with our partners standing behind us and tease them by pulling our skirts tight across our bums and wiggling the buttocks as we danced. Americans called it “twerking”, but we all know it was West Africans who invented it.
It's about having fun, the African way! In Funsi, we still have “Jassi” nights - and we love them!
